Peters pumpkin patch
This is such a GREAT pumpkin patch! We were going elsewhere, but that patch was closed because it was "too wet." So we followed the signs we'd seen along the way for Peter's Pumpkin Patch and, WOW, JACKPOT! It's located at the Spring Hill Dairy, which is a huge bonus, as they make fantastic dairy products and, of course, have their cheese, butter and ice cream for sale. They've got thousands of pumpkins, both picked and still on the vines in the patches. They've got a patch where you can dig up potatoes (yum), hay rides, carriage rides, old tractors, an opportunity to milk a cow and, on weekends, live music. This place is fantastic! Check it out on Spring Hill Road in Petaluma.
If you've ever gone to a Farmer's Market in Marin or Sonoma (or elsewhere in the Bay Area, I'd think), you'll have had a chance to taste Spring Hill Cheese's fantastic cheeses and small-batch butter. Oh my goodness... if you haven't, you'd best do it. Yum!

Toy Story II was great in 3D!
I picked up Davey from school yesterday afternoon and we headed to the Cinema theater in Corte Madera for the 5:15 showing of the Toy Story in 3D double feature. Fun! We cheated and picked up some food at the nearby Safeway before (slices of ham, fresh snap peas, animal crackers and red vines) with thoughts of popcorn and lemonade from the theater. Unfortunately, the Cinema puts BUTTER SALT on their popcorn, so Davey couldn't have any. Nor did I, out of solidarity. We did, however, share a medium lemonade.
The 5:15 show was apparently Toy Story II, which lent itself VERY WELL to 3D. Especially the beginning, the Buzz Lightyear video game. Yeah! After the movie was over, there was a 15 minute or so intermission before Toy Story I. We both had a great time. Davey loved it!

Happy 3rd birthday David!!
3 years ago today, we were at Marin General Hospital in the pre-dawn hours, ready to become a family of 3. I remember looking out the window at the gibbous harvest moon hanging low over Mount Tamalpais and humming Neil Young to myself. Later, prone on the bed, hooked up a fetal heart rate monitor and a drip of pitocin, the Blue Angles roared nearby, doing their Fleet Week performance. Then, at 4 o'clock on the dot, Davey was plucked from my belly and Mark cut the umbilical cord. Life hasn't been the same ever since and I can't imagine it any other way.
Happy birthday my little love!

Sandy and happy
We escaped the heat of Novato for a late afternoon at Dillon Beach. Davey had a wonderful time romping up and down the beach, chasing waves and cautiously eying the stranded jellyfish.

I think, unless too many others have parties there beforehand, Davey's 3rd birthday party will have to be there too.

Growing up
Yesterday Mom was sick so I took care of him for the afternoon. We went to Old McDonalds at his request. He wanted french fries and to play on their structure. Okay, what the heck? Mom would have taken him there had she been well, so fine. Afterwards we walked to Studio 4 Art, another place that David enjoys going with Mom. I'd never had a chance to go there. What a fun time! Kevin, one of the instructors there, recognized Davey immediately and greeted him with a high 5 and a big welcome. He brought over some things Davey had made on previous visits which were fired and ready to take home. Then he set us up with some clay, a rolling pin and lots of interesting things to make textures. Fun, fun, fun! He got to make things, paint and them with glaze.

When there was still a little time left, he let Davey play with the potter's wheel. He was thrilled!

Last night, as we were settling down for him to go to bed, we had read some stories and were listening to music. Davey shushed me while listening to Christopher Parkening's guitar rendition of Ravel: Ma Mère L'Oye - Empress Of The Pagaodas. He sat on my lap, quietly listening to it to the end. I was fascinated watching his face as he took it in and was obviously just enjoying it. I wondered what he was thinking. At the end he simply said, "Aw, that was nice."

Check out that shiner!
On Sunday evening, Davey was running around the back yard, enjoying the cooler temperatures and a visit from Papa Freiberg, Grandma Linda and Uncle Gregg. He got so excited he ran, face first, in to the end of the handle of the wheel barrow. OW!!
Thus... his first shiner.
He wouldn't let me keep a cold pack on his eye so I gave him a dose of Motrin and a dose of Tylenol in hopes of keeping down the swelling and the pain.
He bounced back quickly though. What a boy.
Blackberry cobbler!
The blackberries are in, ripe and plentiful at Bonnie's house! Bonnie, Davey and I picked a quart or so of blackberries very quickly yesterday morning, which I quickly turned in to a cobber. Delish!
Here's the recipe.

Peaches are ripe in our tree!!
And another season of Davey's favorite fruit is upon us. Joy of joys! Planting this frost peach tree was one of the best things we did to this house.

Congratulations Anne and Jason!
On June 13, 2009 we were blessed to attend my beautiful cousin, Anne, marry her wonderful husband, Jason. Congratulations to you beautiful, gorgeous humans. Welcome to the family, Jay!
David the carrot farmer
You know who is enjoying our gardening the most? Yes, Davey. He loves, loves, loves, snacking on carrots and peas fresh from the planters. Thankfully he's sensible enough to wash the carrots before eating them.

The flushed "mixing truck" gets disinfected
We love Greg the Drain Man. He is honest, charges reasonable rates and is a nice guy. Seriously, if you need your drains cleared (or toys removed from your toilet), he's the guy to call.
415-897-8244 (phone)
415-451-3797 (pager)
He got here a little before 8am, used a flexible camera to see where the blockage was and tried getting it out with a snake. Nope, that didn't work. Out came the wet-vac and out went all the water from the toilet bowl and reservoir. Then the toilet came off the floor and exploration inside resumed. Yep, there it was, at the bottom of the toilet... the "missing truck," is what I thought Davey was saying yesterday. Of course he was saying, "MIXING truck." Yes.
David watched the whole process gleefully and waved goodbye heartily to Greg.
I'm putting this on Davey's bill that we will present to him on his 18th birthday.
Maybe.

It was all going so well
Davey and I had such a lovely morning. We started off a bit too early for my taste, but it was tempered by coffee and another viewing of Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Then we played in the back and front gardens, shot photos and movies, cleaned the fish pond. Ahh, such a nice morning.
And then.
I went outside to finish cleaning the fish pond and replace the filter. When I came back inside a few minutes later, Davey said he needed to pee. Okay, let's go to the toilet honey. Once in the bathroom, Davey points to the toilet and says, "I put missing truck in it." Huh? Right, sure honey. Go pee. He does. We flush.
Judging by the poor quality of the flushing now, yes, I believe him.
An impish look of amusement on his face and he repeats from down the hall, "I flushed missing truck! Call the plumber, mommy."
Ohhhhhhh, total toddler rebellion!!
I calmly told him that he is in very, very big trouble and that he did a very, very naughty thing. I told him that, while I love him very much, I am so angry with him that I can't be with him and that he needs to stay in his room. No more treats, TV, books or fun today, he's being punished. I didn't yell, he listened and obeyed calmly. He knows he's in trouble.
We'll see how this goes. I have never punished him more than a 2 minute time-out before. But augh. What else to do when he does something so naughty that he knows he shouldn't do?
Sigh.
And now, a minute of Davey joy:

Davey wins yet another contest!
Oh, our beautiful boy. A while back Whole Foods accepted entries of babies eating their favorite photos. I submitted a photo taken a little after his first birthday, where he'd absolutely gone nuts over some fresh peaches. Wait, where did I get fresh peaches in October? Hm. Well, anyway...
He didn't win first, second or third place in the contest. However, they had a bonus prize: Messiest Baby. Take a look at the results -- so cute!
As a prize, we're to expect a $25 gift card for Whole Foods in the mail. I'll make sure to buy his favorite foods with that card.

Kid of the Month
Aww! When we were in Hawaii, Davey was chowing down on freeze dried fruit made by Just Tomatoes. There was a sticker on the containers encouring entrance in to the Kid of the Month contest so, for the heck of it, I entered Davey. Lo and behold, Davey is the kid of the month!

David is stellar
Can I just say right now: Davey is such a joy!
Today was day 3 in a row of no potty accidents, including even taking his nap in big-boy underwear and no wetness. He routinely goes to the toilet on his own and, if we're out and about, letting me (or whoever he's with) know when he needs to be taken to a bathroom. Way to go!

He insisted on eating NOW NOW NOW! The smell of German lentil soup is intoxicating.
